Este es el único libro que recoge todas las biografías de los 1.523 mártires del siglo XX en España que han alcanzado la gloria de los altares. Son los 11 santos y los 1.512 beatos canonizados o beatificados desde la primera ceremonia de beatificación celebrada por Juan Pablo II en 1987 hasta la última, acontecida en el Año de la Fe, en Tarragona, el 13 de octubre de 2013. El libro ofrece, además, una introducción sobre el sentido del martirio cristiano y un estudio sobre las raíces históricas y las características de la persecución de los años treinta del pasado siglo. Sus completos índices lo convierten también en un valioso diccionario para acercarse a esta página todavía poco conocida de la historia de la Iglesia.
Vicente Cárcel (Manises, Valencia, 1940), ordenado sacerdote en 1963, es doctor en Historia Eclesiástica (Univ. Gregoriana de Roma), Filosofía y Letras (Univ. De Valencia) y Derecho Canónico (Angelicum de Roma).
